ADMIRAL Project kicked-off in Espoo, Helsinki

ESPOO, HELSINKI (04.05.2023) – The EU’s ambitious new initiative, the ADMIRAL project, officially began with a two-day kick-off meeting in Espoo, Helsinki, on May 3rd and 4th, 2023.

This ground-breaking endeavour involves a consortium of 21 partners from 9 countries across the European Union, aiming to revolutionise the freight transportation sector and significantly reduce the region’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Delegates from Croatia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain convened at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., the coordinating body for the project, to establish a roadmap for ADMIRAL’s transformative vision.

At the heart of this vision is creating an advanced multimodal marketplace to manage the entire supply chain infrastructure and monitor related emissions while also serving as a platform for developers to distribute innovative, sustainability-focused solutions.

The meeting was marked by enthusiasm and collaborative spirit as delegates delved into a comprehensive exploration of the four main goals of ADMIRAL. These include evolving seamless operations within supply chains through multimodal logistics, better utilising existing assets and infrastructure, embracing systemic change towards sustainability, and developing and piloting solutions with substantial energy and emission reduction potential.

“ADMIRAL’s kick-off meeting has set the tone for the magnitude of this project,” said Dr Antti Vasara, CEO of the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. “The shared commitment to advancing the EU’s freight transportation sector toward low-emission and energy-efficient practices is palpable among all partners.”

ADMIRAL’s agenda also includes a 20% reduction in emissions and enhanced transparency and resilience in the supply chain. As a significant part of the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, the project aims to deliver an impact beyond the consortium, with ripple effects expected to influence Europe’s whole freight transportation industry.

The kick-off meeting concluded with the determination to drive systemic change in the freight transportation sector and an eagerness to take the first steps toward making ADMIRAL’s vision a reality. The project is anticipated to run until April 2026.
