Digital & Green Multimodal Corridor

what is the pilot about?

A DIGITAL, GREENER AND MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT MULTIMODAL PORT CORRIDOR BETWEEN SINES & MAdrid

The pilot aims to develop a Digital & Green Multimodal Corridor between Sines and Madrid that promotes horizontal and vertical collaboration among supply chain stakeholders, fosters a logistics chain community focused on corridor participants, increases process efficiency, raises awareness of CO2e emissions, reduces freight transport CO2e emissions, and offers a standalone solution featuring a Low Emission Logistic/Transport Catalogue.

Pilot site

The Port of Sines is a deep-water port located 150 km south of Lisbon and is Portugal’s primary energy supply port. It is connected to the main hinterland by road and rail and is positioned at the crossroads of two major deep-sea shipping routes, the North-South, and the East-West. The port serves a hinterland covering the Portuguese territory and a considerable part of Spain.

Who is involved?

  • Pilot Partner / Ports of Sines and the Algarve Authority: co-owns JUL the Portuguese Logistic Single Window, which is used by all Portuguese port authorities to oversee schedules, inspections, and customs, with the capability to integrate other platforms and tools, APS is also partner of NEXUS- which is a parallel initiative that develops an innovation agenda and open data platform for information sharing, focusing on smart logistics products. APS does subcontractor integration, brings knowledge, data, information, stakeholders to ADMIRAL, participates to studies
  • Scientific Support / LNEC & UPM: disseminate outcomes, do studies/ papers / events, integrate results in education, policy consultancies.
    • UPM is committed to publishing the outcomes and related data, along with metadata from their comprehensive analysis. Some data obtained by the pilot will also be used for teaching and further research. UPM representatives will also integrate the results of ADMIRAL into other projects.
    • LNEC produces scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Topics include the sustainability framework, roadmap, sustainable transport logistics, transport innovation technologies. Data obtained in the Portugal-Spain pilot and collaboration will also be used for developing further research and innovation through dissertations/thesis. LNEC also provides consultancy services to municipalities, public and regional transport authorities, and policy and industry clients.
  • Data integration and support / MARLO: Integrator and developer of Low Emissions Catalogue. Marlo is developing a new transport management system aimed at greener logistics, which will be integrated into the ADMIRAL marketplace.
  • Multimodal logistics service providers / Medway (Rail Operator), dry ports Torrejon and Azuqueca de Henares, Abronigal, and
  • Local authorities

Challenges

Which difficulties wants this pilot to solve?

Objectives

What drives the pilot activities?

  • Objective is to establish a multimodal & green digital corridor between Sines and Madrid, including all the cargo and stakeholders along this route, for horizontal and vertical collaboration, where assets and networks are more efficiently used and CO2e emissions and energy from fossil fuels will be significantly reduced, based on the JUL platform and involving terminal operators, multimodal operators, logistics platforms and authorities.
  • Focus on the hinterland component, that is, on the study of solutions and services that allow transport in the hinterland in a more efficient way, with fewer emissions and that allows the Port of Sines to expand/improve its offer.

approach & SOLUTIONS developed

HOW TO REDUCE EMISSIONS & OPTIMISE PROCESSES?

  • Creation a corridor-level catalogue of low emission transport and multimodal strategies and services (including Road and Rail for Corridor) to be included in the marketplace, identifying which services can be integrated
  • Development of a Service Catalogue (Digital Tool)
  • Development of Low Emission Services
  • Integration of the above into the ADMIRAL marketplace
  • Contribution to Publications / Studies (Traffic Analysis Paper) with freight mobility data from the Port of Sines and its hinterland and with stakeholder
  • Traffic Analysis

expected outcomes

  • A mutimodal and green digital corridor between Sines & Madrid promoting horizontal and vertical network collaboration of the logistics community
  • More digital, synchronized, collaborative processes in multimodal transport through information exchange
  • A more efficient use of existing assets and networks resulting in time and cost savings, reduced administrative efforts and significant CO2 reductions
